Always dry clean pure silk sarees, especially Banarasi and Kanjivaram. For lighter silks like Chanderi or Tussar, gentle hand washing in cold water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent is acceptable. Never machine wash.
Never wring or twist silk. Roll the saree in a clean, dry towel to gently remove excess water. Dry in a shaded, well-ventilated area — never under direct sunlight, which fades colours and weakens fibres.
Iron on the reverse side while slightly damp, using a low/silk setting. Place a thin cotton cloth between the iron and the saree. Never iron directly on zari (gold/silver work) as it will crush the threads.
Store folded in a soft muslin or cotton cloth — never plastic, which traps moisture. Fold along original fold lines. Add a few dry neem leaves to deter insects naturally. Avoid cedar or strong mothballs.
Every 2–3 months, refold your sarees along different lines to prevent permanent crease marks at the fold points. This is especially important for stiff silks like Kanjivaram.
To prevent silver zari from tarnishing, store sarees in zip-lock bags after wrapping in tissue paper. Avoid contact with perfumes, deodorants, or sweat, which accelerate tarnishing.
